Healthy children means a happy family
The music, the joys and giggle,
the shouts and fights between two sisters could not be heard. Nor did my
neighbors hear my mother's voice either playing or scolding us. The house had
fallen into deep silence. Tension and fear prevailed everywhere. My sister was
bitten by a snake. She was hospitalized and anti-venom injections were pushed
every hour. My mother’s shouts had melted into sobs all of a sudden. My
fearless father had withdrawn in the corner praying to God. I was very young
probably seven or eight. My sister was just a year elder. Relatives and
neighbors rushed in. Words of consolation were heard from every corner. But at
that age also I knew no word could console my parents wounded heart. No balm
could soothe their pain unless and until my sister got well. Mischievous
by nature, I had always brought smile on my parent’s faces with my harmless
pranks. I still remember the helpless me putting my head in my mothers lap and
crying. That was the first day in my life i realized how a child health or well
being becomes the integral part of family's happiness. I only wanted some
miracle to happen so that my sister got revived. I remember promising God that
I would not ever fight with my sister if He cures my sister.
My sister got cured. But the
anti-venom injections had tremendous side-effects. She got severe allergy with
high temperature. Some termed the allergy as measles. I was not permitted to
get in my sister’s because measles was contagious by nature. But the fever took
toll on my health also. But I had no one to take care of me. I had to measure
my own temperature. My uncle gave me a bottle of Dabur Chywanprash. I dipped a
piece of cloth in water and put in on my forehead. I took spoonful of Dabur Chywanprash
and had it. Luckily I had learned from my uncle to read a thermometer so that
really proved handy. Ignored, sick and alone I never complained because I knew
my sister needed more attention than me. Slowly my sister recovered. I had
recovered much faster and my fever was just a two to three days affair. Slowly
the house resumed to the older music.
